Apple iPhone 17e Launch Tipped for February, MagSafe Finally Coming

It’s interesting to note that the launch of the iPhone 16e is being followed exactly one year later by another launch, which will take place on a Thursday (the 19th). This is out of the ordinary for Apple since most product announcements are made on Mondays or Tuesdays, or occasionally Wednesdays. While Apple does not provide any advance notice about upcoming product releases to accessory and case manufacturers, many accessory manufacturers and distributors try to align their product releases with Apple’s product announcements using “insider” information. Therefore, while there may very well be some conjecture involved, it is possible that these accessory makers would have knowledge of a new device being announced via industry communications or other means prior to an announcement.

Last week, Apple announced the new AirTag and is expected to release the M5 Pro/Max MacBook Pros in early February. While Apple typically announces new iPhones with a press release, as they did with the iPhone 16e, this could happen at any time.

Other than one major change

Industry sources indicate the iPhone 17e will overcome one of the major issues of previously released the iPhone 16e. Unlike the 16e, which lacked MagSafe wireless charging (~7.5 w), the iPhone 17e will use MagSafe wireless charging at 25 w. Based on previous model development, it is safe to say that the iPhone 17e will also continue to use only one rear camera, and that it will maintain the notch that exists on the current generation. However, Dynamic Island may not be included in any next several increments of “e” phones within the Apple-iPhone family until an additional product area is created.

Several months of speculation have surrounded the launch of the iPhone 17e—with reports and leaks consistently suggesting that it will also include MagSafe. Recent reports have indicated that Apple has moved ahead with plans for the iPhone 17e to incorporate the next generation of C1 modems as well. The iPhone 16e does not include the U1 or U2 ultra-wideband chips for Precision Finding, which means that with the release of the new AirTag, the technology can be used as part of Apple’s goal to add access to those features to the new iPhone model.

With iPhone 16e and iPhone 17e launches will take place in Spring and Fall of this year, Apple will establish a regular two-release-per-year cycle for its new iPhones. According to rumor, Apple is planning on moving the entry-level iPhone 18 release date to coincide with the launch of the iPhone 18e in 2027.
